Another
successful Multiple Sclerosis Cactus and Crude 150 Mile Bike Tour
was held July 15th and 16th, 2006. Not only was this the 17th
annual fund- raiser for MS but also a like number of years that
Amateur Radio Operators had furnished communications.
The only injuries sustained were some skinned legs and elbows and
a bee sting inside a ladie's blouse. One State Guard member
suffered heat exhaustion but after a short stay in the hospital
was pronounced OK.
The first day's route covered 75 miles from Midland to Big
Spring. The next day's 75 miles went from Big Spring to Post.
Approximately 135 riders participated.
Radio communications were furnished the first day by members of
the Midland Amateur Radio Club. They were:
| Peter Balog | KB5RTL |
| Bill Bentley | N5POB |
| J.T. Caldwell | WA5ZFH |
| Joe Coldewey | KK5ZG |
| Dwayne Frantz | KD5VOU |
| Ted & Bev Harwood | W5WTX & KC5BNT |
| Jim Reid | K5KUX |
| Doug Salyers | KB5TUN |
| Alan Sewell | N5NA |
| Sterling Talley | WB5G |
| Michael "Tex" Watson | KB5KNF |
Additional radio operators serving in other capacities were:
| John Bean | KE5EZE |
| Butch Gardner | KD5VPB |
| David Ham | KE5FEJ |
| Robert Doerr | KE5GDY |
| J. L. Stevens | N5INC |
Members of the Big Spring Amateur Radio Club furnished
communications on the second day.
Many thanks to all the volunteers that devoted their time and
performed such a great job. Only through your efforts is it
possible that such a worthy cause is successful year after
year.

Field Day
2006 was another big success at Beal Park! An enthusiastic group
met at the clubhouse at 7:00 am Saturday morning and loaded up
all the antennas and equipment. We then caravanned to Beal Park
and started erecting antennas and setting up the equipment.
By kickoff time at 1:00 pm we had two SSB stations, two CW
stations, a GOTA station, a 6 meter station, and a satellite
station ready to go. We had a total of five yagis in the air plus
several verticals and wire antennas.
Saturday afternoon J.T. fired up the club grill and started
cooking GIANT burgers. Hmmmmm good! We topped off the burgers
with cake and ice cream. With lots of visiting going on in
between what could be better?
When the dust cleared we had logged 1420 SSB QSO's and 2040 CW
QSO's. Our total QSO points is approximately 11000 with 1350
bonus. This will give us a preliminary total score of 12350
points. This compares to last year's score of 12518 points.
Check out all the Field Day pictures in the Photo Gallery
compliments of KB5KNF, W5AJ, K5RS, K5JOG, & N5NA. Mark your

John Wilder, WA5PFJ, is proud to announce the
birth of his grandaughter Katelyn Rebeca Vazquez. Katelyn's
parents are Mr. & Mrs. Oseas Vazquez of Oklahoma City.
Katelyn was born April 11, 2006, and weighed in at 7 lbs. 13 oz
and was 21-1/2 inches long.
Grandad has given Rebeca the special event call sign of K5KK (Kit
Kat).
Of course,
John is equally proud of Kendra Nicole Wilder born October 26,
2005, to Mr. & Mrs. John Wilder, III aka WA5PFI.
Kendra weighed in at 7 lbs. 15 oz and was 18 inches long.
Kendra has been assigned the special call of W5LB (Love Bug) by
Grandad. CONGRATULATIONS to all!
Thanks to Tom Merrill, KC5WUN, and Jim Reid, K5KUX, the MARC
70 cm repeater is back on the air.
Tom provided the club with a repeater to replace to old 70 cm
repeater which has been off the air for quite a while. Jim
installed it a couple of weeks ago and it has been working
flawlessly. The new repeater requires a tone of 162.2 hz. Check
it out!
Jim also recently tweaked the receiver on the club's 147.300
repeater. It's working great now too!
A special THANK YOU goes to Jim and Tom!
The Jefferson Amateur Radio Club in SE Louisiana is seeking
help in rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. JARC serves 11
Parishes in SE Louisiana.
All of their equipment and buildings were lost in the Hurricane.

What a fantastic 2006 Hamfest. The new
location was well accepted and we received lots of good feedback.
Sure was a treat to see and spend some time with old friends. I
wish to thank all those who have spent their time and energy to
help make it a success. The forums were a hit. At the Saturday
night ARRL Forum, Bill Lawless, our ARRL West Texas Section
Manager, presented MARC with a very nice plaque to highlight our
2005 Field Day win. It will be proudly displayed in the Club
House.
MARC has been bucking the trend of losing ground on hamfests and
has continued to grow for the last two years. Indications are
2007 will be even bigger from comments we received. So its time
to gather our strength and start thinking about next year!

This news column is normally only for local
amateur radio news. However, this article is of critical interest to all amateurs and should be studied closely.
Among a fringe community of paranoids, aluminum helmets serve as the protective measure of choice against invasive radio signals. We investigate the efficacy of three aluminum helmet designs on a sample group of four individuals. Using a $250,000 network analyser, we find that although on average all helmets attenuate invasive radio frequencies in either directions (either emanating from an outside source, or emanating from the cranium of the subject), certain frequencies are in fact greatly amplified. These amplified frequencies coincide with radio bands reserved for government use according to the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). Statistical evidence suggests the use of helmets may in fact enhance the government's invasive abilities. We speculate that the government may in fact have started the helmet craze for this reason.

The estate of Bob Lowery, W5KGX, has donated Bob's 70' crankup tower to the Midland Amateur Radio Club. Members of the club met at Bob's house on Saturday morning to remove the tower and transport it to the club house. A large crane was used to lay over the tower and load it on K5KUX's flatbed trailer. The whole operation went smoothly and was finished up by noon.
Those helping were K5KUX, WA5ZFH, KB5RTL, KB5KNF, KD5VOU, K5JOG, KD5WGM, and W5MLS. Thanks for all the hard work!
MARC member Jim Reynolds, KK5MV, has landed the part

Last Field Day Robert Wood, W5AJ, brewed some special "GO FAST GENERATOR JUICE" (actually some Dr. Pepper!) to send to the Big Bend ARC. It was guaranteed to help the BBARC generator run smooth all weekend ensuring lots of FD QSO's. The special mixture was delivered by Section Manager John Dyer, AE5B, while making his rounds to the WTX FD sites.
Last week MARC received a package in the mail from the BBARC. The package contained the empty bottle of "Juice" and a nice note. BBARC stated "We lost an hour while we shunted the 180 volts output back to 120 but it was worth it. They ran all weekend without refueling." BBARC were so pleased with the results they have requested "next year would you please send us a gallon of the stuff".
The complete text of the note can be read here.

West Texas Section Manager and MARC member Bill Lawless, W5WRL, had the opportunity to visit ARRL headquarters and
operate W1AW on September, 21.
After attending a VoIP conference in Boston, Bill was able to make a side trip to Newington on his way home. Bill received a tour from Steve Ewald, WV1X, and met Leona Adams who he communicates with often in his position as WTX SM. Bill also met and had a nice visit with ARRL CEO Dave Sumner, K1ZZ.
After touring the ARRL lab Bill made his way to W1AW where Joe Carcia, NJ1Q, set him up in Studio One equipped with a Yaesu FT-1000MP MK V and VL-1000 "Quadra" amp. With the 20m mono bander at 102' pointed at Texas Bill logged 17 contacts during his operating time. His QSO's included his Elmer in CA, W6OMF as well as KD5YCY & WC5V in Abilene, and N5NA in Midland.
Bill said "I really enjoyed my visit to headquarters and especially enjoyed operating W1AW. If you ever have the opportunity to travel in New England I recommend you take the time to visit the ARRL."
Bill had planned to spend a few more days in the area but with Hurricane Rita bearing down on Texas he decided to cut his trip short and get home while the gettin' was good!
The Public Safety Amateur Radio Association of the Permian Basin was activated Saturday morning. The PSARA assisted with communications needs of establishing a Hurricane Rita evacuation shelter at the Chaparral Center at Midland College. Processing of the incoming evacuees was handled at the Midland County Exhibit Building after which they were transported to the Chap Center.
PSARA operators manned the Midland Communications Van at the Exhibit Building and the Midland PD Mobile Substation at the Chap Center. PSARA operations stood down mid-afternoon. At that time 70 evacuees and bus drivers were being housed at the Chap Center.
Operators participating were KK5MV, KK5ZG, W0PEG, KB5KNF, K5WTC, N5NA, KD5VOU, WB5G, WA5ZFH, W5UA, and W5WRL.
MARC member Paul Laverty, K5PDL, has been deployed with his Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) to Kelly AFB in San Antonio. There are about 4500 evacuees at their site.
Paul reports "There are 5 hams with our team. W5WTC is our deputy commander and our commo section is KC5JFG, K5PDL, KG4ZAH and KI4JFM. The Southern Baptist Men's group is set up next door and has at least one ham with them. There is a very organized group of locals who have been running a net on the K5EOC repeater."
Paul sent us these pictures of the shelter and the DMAT members.
A big THANK YOU to Paul and his team for the great work they're doing!
MARC member Bill Bentley, N5POB, won the adult landscape category of the recent Midland Reporter-Telegram / Sibley Nature Center Photo Contest.
Bill told the Reporter-Telegram "My hobbies include cave exploration and amateur radio. I have always been interested in the outdoors and particularly in caves and the exploration of them. I was responsible for the discoveries of the 13th and second deepest caves in Texas in 1981. I have my own web site www.caver.net which is dedicated to the enjoyment of people who like caves. I am also the webmaster for the Texas Speleological Association www.cavetexas.org."
"What I like best about West Texas are the people. In my travels I have never found any friendlier. I also think we have a deal on the best sunsets of any other place. The picture 'Purple Sky' was taken from the front door of my home."
CONGRATULATIONS BILL!
