Local Amateurs participate in the MS Cactus and Crude 150 Bike Tour

   BBy Sterling Talley, WB5G

Local Amateurs participated in the MS Cactus and Crude 150 Bike Tour on July 15, 2000. This is another time in which the local Amateurs exhibited their dedication to working with community activities and disasters, when the need arises. The local HAMS provided communication support in case some of the bike riders were in trouble or needed assistance. Also, they provided information at check points as riders passed.
"The purpose of the event is to raise money and each rider must fund his or her own pledges."
"The riders raised in excess of $6000.00, 60 percent of which will stay with the area chapter to help local patients. The other 40 percent is sent to the national chapter and goes towards research.

"The riders left from the EOG Resources building, located south of the Wadley-Big Spring intersection and rode 77 miles to Big Spring on Saturday, July 15." This is the portion of the ride that the Midland HAMS participated. "They com

pleted the 150-mile tour by riding 73 miles from Big Spring to Alpine on the following day. Buses returned the riders to Midland." (MARC Editor made the following correction to the previous sentence: The bicycle ride went to Snyder instead of Alpine.)
Midland Amateur Radio Club members, that participated and furnished radio communications on Saturday the 15th, were: Jim Reid, K5KUX ; Joe Coldewey, KK5ZG; Doug Harwood, K5MTX; Ted Harwood, W5WTX; Beverly Harwood, KC5BNT; Billy Salyers, KB5TUN; Bill Bentley, N5POB; Ken Williams, K5JOG; and Sterling Talley, WB5G. Also, Ray Randall, N5MGH, served with the Texas State Guard, and was the contact with the State Guard and National Guard. Both units were involved in traffic directing.
Even though it was hot, all went well during the zig-zag 75 mile trek from Midland to Big Spring.
Doug Harwood, KT5MTX, helped on Sunday by going from Big Spring to Snyder with members of the Big Spring Amateur Radio

Club.
Sterling Talley, WB5G, extends a big thank you to all that participated. The Amateurs did a fine job, and it was greatly appreciated by the MS group and the cyclists.

It's a Good Idea

(Every so often, an idea will show up which should be passed along. This idea from the Mount Baker ARC, in Bellingham WA is one of those. This appeared in their December, 1999 issue. Ed) ARNS Bulletin, March 2000.

Rig Testing Upcoming again

For the last couple of years, the club has sponsored a very popular activity. We will test your rig for you. Bring your hand-held, your mobile rig, your antenna, even your HF rig are very useful. We can measure your antenna to see if it resonates on 2 meters. Numerous other test can be administered by Bob, WA7ZWG and helpers.
This well-attended project was the inspiration of W7DAR a few years ago. All kinds of rigs came off the shelves. The intent was to provide kind of printed report showing what, if anything, should be done to your rig. They may be able to do that at this time.
Meet on the 11th (Saturday) at the
