The Shamrock February 2000

Information of Interest

1. The West Texas Connection (147.22) repeater located in Midland County, sponsored by KE5PL and N5XXO, has been relocated to a tower site near the intersection of IH20 and SH158. It is at 230 feet on a new DB-224 antenna. Initial reports indicate considerable improvement on handheld coverage in town. The previous site was approximately 8 miles South of Midland.
Additional improvements will include provisions for battery back-up. This should make the radio more reliable for this years' Storm Spotting.
For those interested in such trivia, the .22 is a 1980's vintage General Electric Master II, 100 watt repeater, Link-Com RLC-1 controller, and WaComm duplexers.

2. The Midland Amateur Radio Club has graciously provided a new Kenwood TM-V7A Dual band radio for use in the Midland County Sheriff's Office Mobile Operations Center (MOC). The "MOC", is a 1990 Summit Motor Coach, obtained at no expense from the Military. The interior was rebuilt by Midland College Building Technologies students as a class project. The communications equipment in the motor home is VHF-Public Safety oriented, but does include 800 Trunked radios compatible with the City of Odessa and City of Midland radio systems. In an effort to "work out the kinks" before an actual emergency, the Sheriff's Office has made the MOC available for this year's Midland ARC Swapfest as a base for "Talk-in".
