Mentone, The Trip West!

   Ken Williams, K5JOG, proposed the idea several months ago of having members of the Midland Amateur Radio Club travel to Mentone, Texas, to set up several Amateur Radio Stations in "Field Day" fashion, so that hams all over the country could get Loving County as a contact for "Worked All Counties." The weekend of October 14th-15th, the idea became a reality. On October 13th, 2000, at 4:00 p.m. Ken Williams, K5JOG, and Pete Stull, WB7AMP, arrived in Mentone to secure the keys to the old school house, permission, and show the Loving County officials proof of liability insurance. By 5:30 p.m. both Pete and Ken began setting up the first station in the old school house. They completed it by 7:45 p.m., only to have to shut it down because of thunderstorms, that had crept in the area. The evening was spent telling "tall tales".
