A quick study of the used HF market
—By Murray Neece, K5MDM

The HF used market , both interenet and dealership wise, has been very slow this last two months. The Icom 756 and Yaesu FT 920 continue to be the most actively sought used radios, with Kenwood 850s after that....The 756 is bringing around $1650 used, the 920 around $1175...to me the radios are equal except for the bandscope and perhaps the 756 is a little easier to use for a novice menu driven operator.....Of course the 850 is straight knobs and buttons with names on them, so it continues to be the choice of the older hams as a step up radio. TS 850s , later serial numbers and good condition seem to average around $1000.00......the older radios such as the Kenwood 830 and 430 have dropped below the $500 mark, some even below $400...There is a glut of older rigs out there...if you study the manufacturers numbers, there are probably 15 radios (in the transistor era) for every ham alive!! But the manufacturers continue to come up with things to make us want the new ones!! If you have any questions about later model rigs you are considering, feel free to drop me a line at : radioranch@qth.com ...see you at the new clubhouse...73 Murray, I am sorry that I forgot to include your article last month. Anytime you have something of interest, please send it and I will be happy to include it. Editor

Flight #15 - Fox Chase

—Jerome Doerrie, K5IS, k5is@hotmail.com “The alien has landed!” came over the two meter 82 repeater.
“What time is it,” I asked those ridding in the suburban with me?
“3:10,” replied Zane.

For four hours and 33 minutes members of the Tri-State Amateur Radio Group, B.O.R.G., Top of Panhandle Amateur Radio Club and others in the tri-state area had been tracking "The Alien" as it flew across Ochiltree county. There were nine mobile teams and six base stations involved with the chase.

Flight #15 of the Perryton High School “Reach For Space Project” carried 439.25 MHz television, a 200 milliwatt 144.290 MHz beacon, and a 1 watt 28.332 MHz beacon. The television package was dubbed “The Alien” by Scott, N5NYS. The one eyed creature had a distinctly “out of this world” appearance. Carman released the balloon package at 10:47 am Saturday, August 28th, from the launch site 4 miles northwest of Booker, Texas. The Alien’s course produced a ground track that went south, then back north, southwest, northwest, south than finished by going northwest. It traveled over 75 miles and reached an altitude of 76,000 to 80,000 feet before landing 13 miles north of Spearman, Texas, some 35 miles southwest of the launch site.

With a telescope at the tracking station at the launch site, Jim W5GAF and Charlie KC5NBH were able to see the balloon at 2:15. At 2:30, just north of Waka, the student group of Amy, Zane, Billy, Carman and K5IS had a visual sighting as the balloon passed over head. The balloon burst at 2:37.

N5WO and N5NYS were near the landing area with N5NYS getting there first.

It was a fun way to enjoy a Saturday. K5IS says thank you to all that assisted with he flight including: NW5OK, KC5NID, KA5QGV,K5GUD, N5FB, KY5C, KC5WBK, WC5Z and Travis, KC5AQW, KC5UNW. W5JLB and Alma, N5WO and Darla, KK5XS, N5NYS, K0UO, KB0HH, KC5UGX, W5EEF, KB5ZSB, W5GAF, KC5NBH, KA5EWA, Amy, Zane, Billy, and Carman.

A 439.25 MHz television package will probably be included aboard Flight #16, which is in the planning stage.
