July 21, 1999
We used to say one more month till school starts, but now it is only a few
days. The meeting July 12 was well attended and Joe Milam, W5UA, brought a
good program on the DX Packet system. Made me want to run out and buy a TNC.
In fact I may just do that. After the meeting, Sterling Talley met with his
group that provided communication for the bike-a-Thon July 17th. As usual,
Sterling had everything well organized. I wish I had been here that Saturday
to join in the fun.
I talked with Ken Williams, K5JOG, Monday, July 19th in Whataburger. He
was having coffee while Steve Hopkins, K5RS and I went over Field Day papers.
Ken said that last Thursday, July 15th, he, Jim Reid, K5KUX and Sterling Talley,
WB5G, went to Abilene to hook a repeater (the 76 machine I think) to the Lynx
System. They hooked the machine up, but wind had damaged the antenna so there
is some question about present coverage. Thanks guys, for your time, work
and money that you give to the Lynx System for amateur radio.
Steve Hopkins, K5RS, told me in person and Bill Bentley, N5POB, e-mailed
and also told me on 2 meters that the web site http://www.w5qgg.org
is up. Looks good.
I talked recently on 147.300 with Hunter Watkins, KD5HCQ, Johnny Bragg,
KD5HGB, and John Peterson, KG5ZA. Hunter and Johnny were real interested in
finding out from John how to contact MIR and the Shuttle. John has received
several instructions on e-mail about this and knows the scoop. Glad to hear
the new hams on 2 meters and good luck to all on making a contact.
Many of the rosters were picked up at the club meeting. Thanks Ted Harwood,
W5WTX, for having the rosters printed and those wonderful labels. I mailed
the rosters which were not picked up on July 13th. Call me if you did not
get one. I plan to be gone next week. I will be on 2 meters to catch up on
the news when I get back.
